Brad Maggrah Congratulates John Duncan on his appointment as
Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and
Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians
(WABIGOON, ONT. – August 9, 2010) Brad Maggrah, President of the Ontario Coalition of Aboriginal People has sent his congratulations to John Duncan on his appointment as the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.
“We wish John Duncan every success in the days ahead and look forward to developing a positive working relationship with the new Minister of INAC and Interlocutor for Métis and Non-status Indians,” said Brad Maggrah. “We also would like to thank the Honourable Chuck Strahl for his hard work and dedication to the interests of Non-status Indians and Métis across Canada.”
With 356,450 Aboriginal peoples living off-reserve, Ontario has the largest share of the ancestry based Aboriginal population relative to all the other provinces and territories. The federal government and the provinces and territories are slowly coming to grips with the fact that 80% of the ancestry-based population live off-reserve and 60% of this population live in urban areas. Close to 90% of the $7-billion Ottawa spends each year on Aboriginal people goes to Indian Act reserves.
OCAP is a member of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) which has represented the rights and interests of off-reserve Status and Non-status Indians and Métis since 1971.
