OCAP Exploratory Process
PARTICIPATE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE OCAP EXPLORATORY PROCESS ON
Indian Registration, Band Membership and Aboriginal Citizenship
On Saturday, November 19th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm, OCAP will be hosting an exploratory process dialogue on the important issues of Indian Registration, Band Membership and Aboriginal Citizenship. The dialogue session will be taking place at the Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre, 50 Hickson Avenue, Kingston, Ontario. Everyone of Aboriginal ancestry is invited to attend.
If you are unable to attend our dialogue session, you can still participate by filling out an exploratory process questionnaire which appears on our website. We encourage people of Aboriginal ancestry to fill in the questionnaire. The results of the survey will appear in a report from the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples to John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. The deadline to submit responses to our online questionnaire is November 30, 2011.
When Bill C-3, Gender Equity in Indian Registration Act was tabled on March 11, 2010, the federal government announced its intention to launch an exploratory process on issues relating to Indian registration, Band membership and Aboriginal Citizenship. With the passage of Bill C-3, the exploratory process was officially launched. During 2011, activities under the exploratory process are now taking place across Canada and will end in December 2011. The exploratory process is intended to be inclusive by encouraging a wide participation of Aboriginal peoples.
The exploratory process is an Aboriginal-led initiative that is meant to examine and discuss the broader issues relating to Indian registration, Band membership and Aboriginal Citizenship that go beyond the scope of Bill C-3 amendments. This is not a consultative process. The federal government has not pre-determined or pre-defined the agenda or questions in terms of subject matters dealing with registration, membership and citizenship.
